For the past 15 years at full-service agency Adams & Knight, she’s had the especially fun job of selling fun, leading the agency’s tourism accounts, including the Connecticut Office of Tourism. Promoting tourism in a state more often associated with snobs, traffic, and “nothing to do” can be a challenge—especially with limited budgets. That challenge has inspired more than a few out-of-the-ordinary approaches, some of which have paid off spectacularly.
One of those big wins is the Pizza Capital of the U.S. campaign, which won a Gold Effie this year. The year-long campaign, with a budget of less than $500K, generated outrageous results: an immediate $11:$1 return on investment and a dramatic improvement in perceptions of the state.
Another big win has been the steady, hockey-stick growth of Connecticut’s core content marketing program. What began as a test in 2016 has grown in sophistication, volume, and performance every year since. Today, its massive library of content is the secret sauce behind the outsized performance of a small state with a small budget surrounded by much more celebrated destinations.
