John Henion is an Emmy, IDA, Critics’ Choice, PGA, and James Beard Award-winning documentary filmmaker and showrunner known for cinematic storytelling across sports, culture, food, and premium nonfiction. His work has helped shape the modern streaming documentary landscape, with credits including Welcome to Wrexham, Chef’s Table, The Playbook, Dear…, and Messi’s World Cup: The Rise of a Legend.
Most recently, Henion directed UNTOLD: The Testimony of Vince Young for Netflix, which spent a week among the platform’s Top 10 films. He also directed The Tides That Bind, a six-part series chronicling a new era of Alabama football under head coach Kalen DeBoer.
Beyond traditional film and television, Henion has directed premium brand- and league-financed original programming, including Uncharted for SailGP and a food and culture series with Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Jonathan Gold for the Los Angeles Times.
Henion currently leads YouTube strategy and original content development for Alabama Athletics, where he is helping build a YouTube-first model that combines premium storytelling, direct audience relationships, athlete access, and new opportunities for brands. His work increasingly focuses on how the storytelling craft of film and television can be applied to emerging platforms to create content audiences actively choose to watch—not simply advertising placed in front of them.
