Many marketing careers begin with tactical work: coordinating projects, updating websites, managing spreadsheets, and supporting campaigns behind the scenes. Mine started with taking lunch orders and organizing stacks of marketing collateral in a supply closet.

Over time, those early responsibilities turned into larger opportunities. Along the way, I learned that career growth rarely follows a straight line. The things you think will define your career early on are often not the things that ultimately move you forward.

This session shares lessons from nearly two decades in B2B marketing across technology, cybersecurity, fintech, and professional services, including my path from marketing practitioner to Vice President of Marketing at Schneider Downs and now Chief Revenue Officer at Squire. Through honest stories and practical insights, we will explore how marketers can identify where they create the most value, build influence inside their organizations, and use a marketing-first mindset to grow into broader revenue, growth, and leadership roles.

For marketers who want to keep growing, this session focuses on defining what success looks like for you and building the skills, credibility, confidence, and perspective needed to reach the next level of your career, wherever that may lead.

Takeaway

  • How to recognize career red flags and green flags—from roles, managers, and organizations—and use them to make smarter career decisions.
  • How to identify where you create the most value in marketing and double down on the skills and opportunities that actually accelerate your career.
  • How to move from "the person who gets things done" to someone leadership trusts to shape strategy, influence decisions, and advance into leadership roles.
